Vessels operating in ice have been controlled manually, but with the increasing level of activity in the offshore oil and gas sector in the Arctic and in waters in which sea ice occurs, it is expected that in future more routine operations will be undertaken using DP in ice-covered water.
Aker Arctic Technology has undertaken a wide-ranging programme of work addressing these challenges, including a considerable amount of theoretical work and model testing.
