Emission regulations are an additional burden on owners

The extra systems required to comply with upcoming environmental regulations will significantly impact space and weight for new product tanker designs. IMO rules on gaseous emissions (sulphur and nitrous oxides in emission control areas, known as ECAs, under Marpol Annex VI) mean owners will need to consider utilising engine exhaust abatement technology or installing separate fuel systems for marine gasoil (MGO).
