Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Japan, has in recent years published details of new technologies that it is investigating to improve the efficiency and flexibility of its turbochargers. Two areas of particular interest are a hybrid turbocharger that also acts as a generator and an auxiliary blower, and a variable turbine device for turbochargers. The idea is not new.
