Ice class technology is breaking new ground

An important milestone occurred in mid-April when Lloyd’s Register announced that it was issuing new rules for vessels traversing through icy waters in a ‘stern-first’ mode. LR noted that increased ordering had occurred for vessels “with options such as podded propulsion systems and azimuthing thrusters – products that can improve icebreaking capability and reduce resistance – allowing them to navigate stern-first through ice”.
