Arctic routes demand more from technology

More test voyages through the Arctic Northern Sea Route have been successfully accomplished by Sovcomflot, and there is increasing optimism that the route could be navigable from July to November. Ice conditions are being monitored by research teams, with at least eight condensate shipments tested in 2011. The largest vessel to transit the route so far, in a voyage from Murmansk to Map Ta Phut in Thailand, is the ice-strengthened 1A class Suezmax tanker Vladimir Tokhonov. A further voyage by a P....
