China climbs LNG importer ranks

China is rising up through the ranks of the LNG importing nations. A total of 12.21 million tonnes (mt) of LNG were shipped to the country last year, a 30 per cent rise on the 2010 level. The surge in shipments was enough to push China past Taiwan to become Asia’s third largest LNG importer. Taiwan received 11.95mt of LNG in 2011, or 6 per cent more than the country’s total for the previous year. For most of last year China had only three baseload LNG import terminals in operation a....
