Costs drive crew communications choices

Seafarers have several technological alternatives to call family and friends on shore. GSM and satellite communications, including satellite phones, mean that sailing the oceans is not quite as isolating as it once was. However, maritime communication can be expensive, so options are available that are designed to minimise costs.
