"In an industry where keeping abreast of regulatory changes and networking with the right people is vital, this conference gives you the opportunity to do both."
Fredrik Larsson, Marine Manager, Assistant Regional Manager Middle East & South Africa, INTERTANKO

"The Tanker Safety Conference is a forum where professionals can meet with their peers and ensure that good industry practice is shared."
Captain Ian Mathison, Director - Marine and Safety, Bibby Ship Management Limited

The Tanker Safety Conference focuses on safety and security issues confronting our industry.

Its programme is designed to bring together all stakeholders – charterer, owner, trading company, manufacturer, regulator, consultant, service company, academic, designer, shipbuilder, finance and insurance, class and industry association – from all over the world, in order to gather intelligence, network and gain practical insights into maintaining and promoting tanker safety and effective emergency response.

The event builds on the success of Tanker Shipping & Trade, the world’s leading magazine dedicated to coverage of the technical and commercial aspects of the world’s tanker industry and is the latest in a series of highly successful London based conferences organised by maritime information specialist Riviera Maritime Media.

These web pages will be updated with programme information on an ongoing basis in the run-up to the event.

"A quality ship registry must always take a proactive approach in relation to safety, security and environmental protection. To do this, it is critical that there is an active dialogue with owners, operators and industry stakeholders. This is one of the reasons the Marshall Islands Registry is participating in the Tanker Safety Conference 2009.  Riviera Maritime Media has put together a conference specifically addressing issues facing stakeholders in the tanker market with respect to safety and emergency response. As a Registry long in tanker tonnage, with a focus on quality and service, we would be remiss not to participate in this event," said John Ramage, Director, Worldwide Business Operations, International Registries, Inc., the Marshall Islands Maritime and Corporate Administrators."

The best time to plan how you would manage your company’s reputation at times of crisis is when you’re not in one. This is particularly important for the tanker industry which is under constant public scrutiny. The risk of not being prepared to execute a well planned integrated response can have a direct impact on the bottom line and result in damaging consequences to the reputation of individual tanker owners and operators, charterers and the industry as a whole. One poorly managed communications response can negate all industry-wide achievements; one well-planned and integrated response can secure stakeholder confidence and protect the industry’s reputation.

In Session 5, Kim Barbero, ABC, Principal of Carah Worldwide Consulting, Inc (www.carahworldwide.com) will share the framework for how to prepare for the unexpected while taking into account the sensitive and evolving media environment. The impact and importance of social media will be explored as will the influence citizen journalists and other key stakeholders wield in influencing public opinion and, ultimately, shaping the reputation of a company.
