Where the tanker industry goes to discuss the safety agenda

Piracy, vetting, emergency preparedness as well as human factors and training are just a selection of the topics that fell under the spotlight at Riviera Maritime Media's Tanker Safety Conference, November 17 - 18, London.

The event was founded in 2009 and has quickly earned reputation as the place where the tanker industry goes to discuss and set the safety agenda. It has grown year-on-year, and in 2010 drew 144 attendees, including 45 shipowners from 26 difference countries. Its official industry backers include Intertanko, Intermanager, IUMI and ITOPF.

To ensure the 2011 conference programme was truly relevant and fit-for purpose, it was compiled in partnership with an expert industry panel. Members include: Torben Grouleff Hertel, general manager, Eitzen Chemical; Michael Powell, former global head of tanker operations, ST Shipping & Transport (Glencore); and Jonathan Spremulli, general manager, Liberian Registry, (UK).

Highlights this year included a presentation from Dipendra Singh Rathore, a former deck cadet on the Marida Marguerite (which was hijacked for eight months in 2010). He detailed his experiences and also argued that industry is failing to properly prepare crew for piratical attacks, and care for them following one.

There was also an innovative round table session on training. The outcomes and action points arising from its four parallel streams will be pursued through the pages of industry magazine Tanker Shipping & Trade, and reported on at the Tanker Safety Conference in 2012. The overall chair of this session is John Ramage, director, COO, International Registries, Inc/The Marshall Islands Registry.

At the end of the first day (November 17) Jan Kopernicki, the former head of shipping at Royal Dutch Shell, the world’s largest charterer of tankers, was presented with the Tanker Shipping & Trade Lifetime Achievement Award. Last year's winner was another Shell alumni, Dr Peter Swift, former managing director of Intertanko.

Riviera's Tanker Safety Conference was again held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, literally round the corner from London’s Gloucester Road tube station. This year's platinum sponsor was ClassNK. Once again there was a supporting exhibition and extensive networking opportunities. For more information, please see: www.rivieramm.com/events

The event builds on the success of Tanker Shipping & Trade, the world’s leading magazine dedicated to coverage of the technical and commercial aspects of the world’s tanker industry and is the latest in a series of highly successful London based conferences organised by maritime information specialist Riviera Maritime Media.
