Session one – DP technologies: the current position and future developments
The number of vessels fitted with dynamic positioning systems has seen a significant rise and it is set to increase at an accelerated rate. All new OSVs are now equipped with DP systems. This session examines the key issues regarding the many influences over DP and its growth into the future. It will ask what are the factors shaping future DP technologies and use of DP and what will the industry look like in the next 3 – 5 years? The session culminates in the DPO Forum with viewpoints on the issues that concern DPOs - those at the ‘coalface’ who have to deal with rapidly changing requirements and demands. This session also highlights issues at the bridge for DPO's, as they share their operational experiences in the DPO forum.

12.30 Q&A
12:40 Panel debate: DP trials and FMEAs
What are the current guidelines and likely future guidelines for DP trials and failure modes of DP systems? How do class societies differ? In a client-driven market, what are the client requirements in an FMEA? How might these differ from owners and shipyards? What external references are taken into account when undertaking an FMEA? How can owners ensure they get the best from their FMEAs?

15:20 DP in Ice-Covered Waters: R&D Using Model Testing
Results from recent DP model testing conducted at the National Research Council's Ice Towing Tank model test facility (the largest of its kind in the world). The tests were conducted with a free-running large scale model of an ice-class drillship in realistic managed ice conditions. This presentation will discuss how the results of model testing can be used for design and operational guidance and can point the way to future improvements and advancements in DP technologies for such harsh operating conditions.
