Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery

August/September 2010

This year, the August/September issue of Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery is once again available in both English and Chinese formats.

As the recently recruited deputy editor of Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery I consider it a privilege to be associated with the leading maritime publication that provides industry professionals with relevant technical information and detailed analysis of the latest advances in marine engineering.

Coming from a sea-going engineering background and previous employment as a superintendent engineer, I appreciate the value of reliable industry insight. In the coming issue we will have geographical features examining some recent developments from marine engineering companies in China, Korea and Russia. There is an in-depth feature on noise and vibration, the latest information from classification societies and articles on topical subjects such as fuel saving, lay-ups and environmental issues.

Also included in this issue will be our usual updates on equipment such as fuel injection systems, fire protection equipment, four-stroke engines, transmissions, propulsors, condition monitoring, wet waste and heat exchangers.

More details on the contents of these features are:

Noise and vibration – noise and vibration from commercial shipping is moving higher up the IMO agenda, therefore designers and manufacturers are looking at new ways to reduce the impact it has on the marine environment.

Wet waste – new IMO requirements for wet waste present further challenges for black water systems, and the disposal of food waste is likely to need special consideration in the future. Cargo hold wash down waste can no longer be pumped directly overboard in the Mediterranean, we analyse the needs and look at suitable systems on the market.

Vessel Lay-up – the decision to lay-up a vessel is a complex one. Location, manning and asset preservation all need careful consideration by owners and operators. A series of lay-up articles will appear in this and subsequent issues examining the different solutions on offer.

Machinery Repair – a round up of recent repair news from around the world, including coverage of the Alfa lubricator, the latest developments at PrimeServ Norway, the ASRY/Wartsila Joint venture in Bahrain, Wartsila’s new machinery repair facilities in Mexico and the Harris Pye and Sobrena joint venture in Brest.

Spares – as the recession sees maintenance budgets reduced, efficient logistical support is a priority. This article gives an insight into how some companies manage the after-sales business.

Heat Exchangers – a round up of recent activities, including how a UK company has responded to the recession, a new electrically operated steam generator and the simplicity of box coolers.

Turbocharger Repairs – recent news from OEM and turbocharger repair companies around the world.

Fire Protection/Prevention – in an effort to improve ship safety and satisfy the regulations research into fire safety technology is big business. This article celebrates the success of some of the leading companies in this field and covers some recent product launches.

Fuel injection – common rail injection is one of the ways engine builders are addressing emissions legislation. How equipment manufacturers such as DUAP, Heinzmann, L’Orange and MAN Diesel have developed this system is explained in this feature.

Ship types: Tankers – we look at the tanker market, the design of short sea tankers and talk to Jacob Norrby, Newbuilding Manager – Tankers, Stena Rederi AB about the new Stena E-MAXair.

Marine engineering in China – Duncan Payne went to China and reports first hand on the progress of marine equipment manufacturers who set up production facilities in China to be close to the Asian shipyards.

Lubricants – news from the leading oil suppliers such as a new training programme announced by Castrol, DAC testing from ExxonMobil Marine Lubricants, and the recent delivery of a double hulled marine lubricant barge operating out of Singapore for Chevron.

Machinery surveys and classification – a look into the world of ABS, ClassNK and BV in this case and recent projects undertaken.

I hope you will find this issue as absorbing as ever and I especially hope that our Chinese readers will find the translated version of the journal a worthwhile read.

Duncan Payne,
Deputy editor
