Seacor scoops 2019 MP Hybrid Power & Propulsion Award for battery conversions

The potential of batteries in the offshore sector was the subject of a winning nomination in the new Hybrid Power & Propulsion category

The potential of batteries in the offshore sector was the subject of a winning nomination in the new Hybrid Power & Propulsion category

Seacor’s conversion of offshore supply vessels for battery power secured the operator the Hybrid Power & Propulsion Award. The strong collaboration between operator, technology providers and class society ABS – as well as the abundant efficiency and emissions benefits of hybrid operation – clinched the trophy for this landmark offshore ship conversion project.

Seacor integrated a lithium-ion battery system onboard its OSV Seacor Maya, a 285-ft dynamically positioned diesel-electric vessel. The shipowner designed the system in cooperation with Kongsberg Maritime and Corvus and developed a plan to integrate the battery system with the ship’s control and power management disposition.

“The batteries have reduced the vessel’s average fuel consumption by 20%, convincing Seacor to adapt three more vessels so far, with plans for a further six”

The lithium-ion battery system is complex. The battery, enclosed in a 20-ft shipping container, weighs approximately 28 tonnes. Like other battery-based technologies, the lithium-ion batteries require risk management comprising temperature control, power management, backup and redundancy, and modulation of charging and discharging. The battery system is also surrounded by a heating and cooling system.

Seacor selected ABS to provide technical reviews and survey verifications of equipment and installations on board Seacor Maya. The vessel was converted at Bollinger Shipyards in Morgan City, Louisiana, with the integration of the lithium-Ion battery system completed and made operational within 90 days. The batteries have reduced the vessel’s average fuel consumption by 20%, convincing Seacor to adapt three more vessels so far, with plans for a further six.

ABS container ship sector director Jan Otto de Kat collected the award on the shipowner’s behalf. "Seacor had a good idea," he said. "It makes sense to put in batteries to help equalise loads. I hope this concept will see further operations. The offshore application is a good start.”

Highly commended

Hydrogen fuel gas supply system by MAN Cryo: The first marine fuel gas supply system designed for use with hydrogen fuel represents an important step in preparing for a fuel that offers significant potential in shipping, either in engines or to generate electricity via fuel cells.

Self-contained battery system by Trident: Stena Line has retrofitted the ropax vessel Stena Jutlandica with a self-contained, ’plug and play’ energy storage system that won praise for making battery technology a simpler and cheaper option for shipowners to consider.

Hybrid Centre by Wärtsilä: The world’s first full-scale facility for testing hybrid propulsion arrangements and trialling new functions to accelerate market uptake, Wärtsilä’s Hybrid Centre in Trieste was commended for advancing understanding of a rapidly growing marine technology concept.
