The debate around the desirability of full vessel autonomy continues, but the systems developed along the way will lead to improved safety and more efficient use of vessels. The Autonomous & Remote Operations Award recognises these systems and pilot vessels.
The number of autonomous vessel investigations has been increasing steadily and last year saw some landmark trials across several vessel segments. These ranged from full autonomy tests through to remotely controlled voyages and pilot studies of situational awareness systems. Meanwhile collaboration between universities, research institutions and commercial companies in these areas are also increasing. All are eligible for this award category.
Candidates must place their project in the context of the wider development of autonomous and remote-controlled vessels as well as highlighting any new technologies developed.
