Workboats within inland waterways will identify navigation hazards quicker with a new radar sensor and display
Navigating inland waterways worldwide will be improved with the launch of a new, powerful river radar that detects hazards more effectively.
Furuno has introduced a new generation of its river radar with improvements in detecting waterway banks, buoys and moving or static vessels.
Its FR1918 VBB radar has 12 kW output and higher power than its smaller version of this range with a power output of 4 kW. This greater power increases the 12-kW radar’s ability to identify hazards quicker and at longer distances, enhancing the situational awareness of workboat masters.
FR1918 VBB has 10 pre-set towing configurations for tugboat operations.
Furuno’s radar has range rings and distance measurements in inland units to help masters identify sailing time to a hazard. It has barge icons that can be displayed with length and width measurements for more accurate hazard positioning.
FR1918 VBB radar uses a custom river mode with an ultra-short pulse length for superior bank, buoy and vessel detection. Its output can be displayed on Furuno’s MU190V 12-in marine-grade portrait display.
Radar processor outputs two video signals in high resolution, of 1280 x 1024. It has six input/output ports to interface with other wheelhouse electronics and a direct link to a voyage data recorder.
It also has dual-SD card slots for capturing screenshots and for system configuration back-up and settings restoration.
It has been a strong 12 months in radar development and new product launches. Here are a selection of technical articles on the subject.
