DNV GL and Kongsberg have signed an agreement to enable data sharing for digital class and assurance services, aiming to save time and costs
This agreement will allow customers of Kongsberg’s Vessel Insight to share data with DNV GL for use in digital services.
DNV GL chief executive for maritime Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen thinks this arrangement will enable the classification society to provide new class services to shipowners and reduce the need to send out surveyors.
“Currently, most class inspections require the surveyors to be on board the ships,” Mr Ørbeck-Nilssen explains. “However, we can now perform some surveys by analysing digitally obtained data on shore.”
This should result in enhancements to assurance services. “By enabling customers to share their data via Kongsberg’s Vessel Insight, we can expand the amount of data we are able to access and offer even more class and assurance services digitally,” said Mr Ørbeck-Nilssen.
“This will help customers not only to reduce their costs, but streamline their daily operations.” It will also optimise ship operations and emissions.
Kongsberg’s data infrastructure solution, Vessel Insight, will be used to collect and transfer data from vessels to DNV GL.
Kongsberg executive vice president and Kongsberg Digital president Hege Skryseth thinks this agreement is a key part of the shipping industry’s digitalisation drive that could be replicated and expanded in the future.
“We believe that broad maritime digitalisation and the value generation for shipowners will be achieved much faster if expert vendors work together to solve industry challenges,” said Ms Skryseth. “By combining DNV GL’s expertise in digital class and assurance solutions and Kongsberg’s maritime data infrastructure we are putting together necessary pieces of a puzzle – to help our customers see the full picture,” she said.
This agreement builds on the pre-existing, long-standing relationship between Kongsberg and DNV GL, accelerating the adoption of digital capabilities and technologies in a reliable, safe and sustainable manner in maritime.
Kongsberg Digital developed Kognifai as a platform for hosting digitalisation applications and programmes. This is already linked to DNV GL’s Veracity platform offering various digital class and assurance services.
Kongsberg Digital is also working with KVH to provide connectivity and condition monitoring services, with the first trial being carried out on a Kongsberg vessel.
Information sharing will be a key focus on Riviera Maritime Media’s Optimised Ship Forum series in 2020. Both DNV GL and Kongsberg Digital gave presentations of their latest digitalisation technology at the Optimised Ship Forum in London in December 2019
