Two dual-fuel battery hybrid platform supply vessels under construction in Poland have been acquired by Sweden’s Viking Supply Ships in partnership with funds managed by shipping manager Borealis Maritime
Viking Supply Ships will have partial ownership of the vessels and full operational and commercial management.
The price of the transaction was not disclosed, but Viking Supply Ships said it “represents a significant discount” compared to the original contract price and estimated newbuild prices for similar assets.
UK-based ship evaluation firm VesselsValue reported a market value on the platform supply vessels (PSVs) at US$28M each for hull 8563 (ex Siem Melody) and hull 8564 ex Siem Rhapsody.
Based on a Wärtsilä VS 4411 DF design, the two PSVs are being built by Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk, Poland, with the first to be delivered in Q4 2020 and second in Q1 2021.
By purchasing the PSVs, Viking Supply Ships will acquire two of just a handful of fuel-flexible OSVs that can operate on LNG, marine gasoil or via battery-hybrid power. Besides their Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines, the vessels come fully equipped with a battery pack which will further reduce consumption and emissions. Each PSV will have an overall length of 89.2 m, beam of 19 m, clear deck area of 980 m2 and 10,800 bhp, with class notations of Ice-1C, dynamic positioning class 2, Stand by, Oil Rec and Fifi. Viking Supply Ships said the PSVs are considered to complement the existing fleet and will further enhance its harsh environment capabilities.
