New digital infrastructure for engines and turbochargers will offer ship crew, operators and owners access to a growing range of paid-for remote services.
The MAN CEON platform will power MAN Energy Solutions’ PrimeServ Assist remote monitoring and optimisation service, launched recently by the company’s after-sales division, and will be the platform through which all future digital services are delivered. It will be standard to all new MAN engines, turbines and compressors from this year.
MAN head of digital and strategy Per Hansson said that the platform was designed to monitor several thousands of customer installations in parallel, with a data-processing capacity that “exceeds that of many major social-media platforms”.
He said: “All of our machines, are equipped with hundreds of sensors that transmit data constantly. MAN CEON enables the efficient collection, storage and evaluation of these data volumes. We are monitoring down to the level of small subcomponents, much like with a ‘digital twin’, with high-resolution data available on demand.”
The new platform can be retrofitted to existing machinery within hours and ship crew will be able to configure it in many cases. The standard installation is based on a locked-down device running on Linux Ubuntu operating system within the engine control room cabinet. Vessels will need an internet connection of at least 256kB and upload and download speeds of up to 400kb/s for high-quality video calling.
Less than 100 vessels with MAN two-stroke engines have had remote diagnostics through a secure VPN tunnel for up to a decade. These will be migrated to MAN CEON, Mr Hansson confirmed. Four-stroke engines have also been monitored by PrimeServ for more than a decade.
“MAN CEON builds on this by providing access to the data in near real-time to enable pro-active advice and through providing those customer teams access to the same monitoring and analysis tools that our MAN PrimeServ teams are using,” said Mr Hansson.
Projects that improve maintenance or condition monitoring are eligible for nomination in several categories at the Marine Propulsion Awards. Make your nominations before 24 March.
