Fairplay Towage has opened operations in the Canary Islands, Spain, to provide towage, ship manoeuvring and berthing support services in the port of Las Palmas
Fairplay Towage managing director Walter Collet said the company has four tugs operating in Las Palmas. “Our tugs have already performed the first assistance in the port,” he said.
“Our fleet currently consists of four modern tugs under Spanish flag, manned by Spanish seafarers under a local Spanish contract.”
Mr Collet said Fairplay offers “competitive packages for harbour towage” in the port. “For the first time, clients have a choice in the port of Las Palmas,” he said.
These activities are being handled by its Spanish partner Odiel Towage.
This could be a platform for further growth in the country as part of Fairplay’s international expansion plans. “We are of course monitoring the developments on the Spanish mainland,” said Mr Collet.
It was tough for Fairplay to secure the licence to operate harbour tugs in the port.
“The preparation and the necessary documentation of our application under Spanish rules was quite challenging,” said Mr Collet. “The conditions to be met are considerably higher compared to other jurisdictions in Europe.”
Headquartered in Germany, Fairplay operates a fleet of more than 100 tugs operating in Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands.
Fairplay also provides support vessels for oil and gas and renewables operations in the North Sea and the Baltic. It also operates oil recovery and emergency towing vessels in Germany and the Netherlands as part of the European Coastal Protection Scheme.
