Owners of offshore support vessels and tugs will be able to monitor operations and onboard equipment following the introduction of a new platform
Damen Shipyards, one of the most prolific producers of tugboats and service vessels, has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to develop an integrated internet-of-things (IoT) platform.
This technology will be deployed on Damen’s newbuildings to enhance their operation throughout their lifecycle.
Together, Damen and Tata will connect sensors on board these vessels to programs for monitoring fuel consumption and machinery condition. Up to 10,000 to 15,000 sensors per vessel will generate streams of data to provide insights into vessel operations and performance and be fed into Damen’s Connected Platform linked to its engineering and enterprise, resources and planning platforms.
Damen expects to offer services from the IoT data streams and analysis, such as predictive maintenance, remote services access and savings in fuel consumption.
Damen chief information officer Aart Rupert anticipates further levels of collaboration and knowledge sharing with vessel owners and the wider maritime eco-system.
“This will aid Damen in its graduation from shipbuilder to maritime services provider,” said Mr Rupert. It will enable Damen to assist its clients throughout the entire lifecycle of their vessel.
"Our intention is to build a platform to share information with our ecosystem," said Mr Rupert. "We can make our ships smarter with benefits including fuel savings and predictive maintenance."
Maritime and offshore IoT will be discussed during Riviera Maritime Media’s Optimised Ship Forum in London on 11 December.
