Shipmanagement group chose a cloud-based platform as part of its data analytics strategy
Wallem Group has selected a software platform for managing its fleet operations, marking a milestone in digitalisation.
Following an evaluation of existing services, Wallam chose BASSnet fleet management systems for its maritime software requirements. This is a cloud-based suite of integrated programs that cover ship maintenance, safety, operational and financial management.
Wallem chief executive Frank Coles said this cloud-based solution will allow the shipmanagement group “to integrate the power of big data with our business processes”.
He explained why Wallem wanted an off-the-shelf software package rather than a customised solution.
“Considering the complexities of operations, compliance and the regulatory environment, I was keen to not reinvent the wheel,” Mr Coles said.
“We have chosen to install a cloud-based solution, without customisation, exactly how digitalisation is supposed to be done.”
He believes ship operations and management do not need inhouse solutions. “It does not need all the disparate or heavily customised homegrown systems,” said Mr Coles.
“In my view, offering transparency, analytics and business intelligence is the way forward for high-performance fleet management.” He expects BASSnet to deliver these goals. “We are going to walk the talk,” said Mr Coles.
This will be a complete enterprise solution for standardising ship processes and management.
BASSnet’s modules will be accessed by web and mobile applications. It will store data and analyse this to provide an overview of fleet performance, while identifying areas for improvement. This can be used for streamlining operations and increasing fleet efficiency, asset management and safety.
Wallem provides technical and operational shipmanagement, supporting the complete lifecycle of a vessel from newbuilding supervision to end-of-life recycling guidance. Its portfolio includes asset management, crewing, training, safety, compliance management and agency services.
It operates globally with a shore-based team of 1,000 and more than 7,000 highly qualified seafarers, serving nearly all vessel segments.
In April, Wallem appointed John-Kaare Aune as the new managing director of ship management. He will begin in this position on 1 July 2019. He joins Wallem from the Cayman Registry, where he was most recently regional director for safety and compliance in the Asia Pacific region.
