McAllister Towing LNG Services will be the technical manager for what will be the largest LNG bunkering vessel in the US when it becomes operational on Florida’s east coast later this year
One of the oldest marine towing and transportation companies in the US, New York-based McAllister will operate the LNG articulated tug barge (ATB) unit for Polaris New Energy (PNE), the marine bunkering subsidiary of Seaside LNG Holdings.
The ATB consists of 2,983-kW ocean tug Polaris, under construction at Master Boat Builders in Alabama, and the 5,500 m3 ocean tank barge Clean Canaveral, being built by Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Wisconsin. The two vessels will be connected via a Jak-400 coupling system. PNE is building the ATB for coastwise transportation of LNG and to deliver LNG as a clean maritime transportation fuel.
McAllister vice president operations Captain Steven Kress believes this endeavour further demonstrates McAllister’s commitment to safeguard the environment by expanding upon its LNG experience in Cove Point, Maryland and Jacksonville, Florida. “We are honoured that Polaris New Energy has recognised McAllister’s reputation for quality and safety, through our robust QSM system.”
In connection with the operation, Captain Marino Hwang has been named general manager of McAllister Towing LNG Services. Captain Hwang has worked for more than 20 years in marine transportation, with experience at K-Sea Transportation and Kirby Offshore Marine before joining McAllister.
Captain Hwang said, “LNG is a clean fuel alternative and its use as a marine fuel is expanding, giving us the opportunity to be part of this emerging industry.”
Seaside LNG Holdings senior vice president of operations Tom Sullivan said, McAllister Towing brings “a tradition for providing unsurpassed operational excellence. We look to strengthen our strategic partnership with McAllister as we continue to develop our position in the market by adding ATBs to our fleet and expanding to all coasts of the United States.”
Seaside LNG Holdings is a subsidiary of Northstar Holdco Energy focused on the production and delivery of LNG as a clean transportation fuel. Northstar is a diversified logistics company providing services to the North American energy industry.
The US has two LNG bunker vessels in operation: 2,200-m3 LNG bunker barge Clean Jacksonville and 4,000-m3 LNG ATB Q-4000, both based on the east coast of Florida.
