As with most things in life – you get what you pay for. As a general rule, more expensive products tend to deliver superior benefits over a longer period of time

Adding up the savings over the life of a product and making a comparison with the initial outlay often proves that the slightly more expensive product will pay for itself – and more – in the longer term. That’s important to keep in mind as we navigate through the current turbulent environment. Fuel saving is a long-term issue for vessel owners and many are looking for long-term solutions to help them achieve that. Fouling protection is a great example of where investing in quality will pay dividends in the future.
Fouling is a drag
Fouling has a significant impact on a vessel’s operational efficiency. It creates frictional resistance, requiring the vessel to burn more fuel to maintain a given speed. Typically, a hull with hard fouling can cause an increase in engine power by as much as 20 per cent over five years. By simply investing in an advanced hull coating, fouling can be minimised, frictional resistance reduced and significant fuel savings made.
Hempel, the worldwide coatings manufacturer, with over 100 years’ experience in coating technology, recently launched a game-changing fouling defence system: Hempaguard MaX. This innovative coating solution delivers an exceptionally smooth surface to significantly lower the average hull roughness which, in turn, reduces drag and fuel use. Thanks to its improved fouling protection, Hempaguard MaX delivers a guaranteed maximum speed loss1 of 1.2 per cent over five years (according to ISO 19030).
Hempaguard MaX is a unique three-coat solution that is applied in just three layers, reducing time in dry dock by up to two days when compared with a conventional silicone system. By reducing the application time required and combining this with the added fuel savings, the entire cost of the coating could be paid back within three months2. But the benefits do not end there. Hempaguard MaX allows full trading flexibility without restriction on water temperature, operating area or trading pattern. With these exceptional out-of-dock fuel savings and operational flexibility, Hempaguard MaX has set the standard for peak efficiency.
Investing in quality is rarely a wrong decision.
Hempaguard MaX at a glance:
1 Speed loss: If a vessel’s main engine is set at a certain power output, it will propel the ship through the water at a certain speed. Over time, fouling accumulation will increase drag and cause the speed of the ship to reduce even if the main engine power output remains constant. This reduction in speed is termed “speed loss”.
2 Based on a VLCC with activity level of 70 per cent and burning low sulphur fuel costing 35 per cent more than standard bunker fuel over a five-year life cycle. Hempaguard MaX system delivers an annual saving of around USD 1.8 million compared to a market average antifouling. This equates to a ROI (return on investment) of three months.
