Danish Shipping has been quick to praise the offshore wind-based climate agreement agreed this week by the Folketing, Denmark’s parliament, an agreement that it expects shipping companies to benefit from significantly
Danish Shipping chief executive Anne H Steffensen told OWJ, “Offshore wind energy is already a big business for many Danish shipping companies, and the decision to expand capacity in Denmark makes the playing field bigger and allows shipping companies to grow. It provides jobs throughout Denmark.
“Today, at least 17 different types of vessels are used during the lifetime of an offshore windfarm. And Danish offshore shipping companies are world leaders in a number of segments, including installation.
“Whether our shipping companies specialise in installing turbines or transporting windfarm technicians, strong maritime skills are a prerequisite for the development of offshore wind.
“We now see an increasing need for this in Denmark, and we are of course happy to contribute to the green transition.”
Ms Steffensen said the Danish climate agreement also contains elements that are relevant to Blue Denmark and Danish Shipping’s members. These include investment in green technology such as power-to-X, carbon capture and green transport.
“We all have a responsibility to reduce our climate footprint. And even though we are already well underway in the shipping companies, it is important to understand that the green transition will only happen if we all join forces. That is why I would like to acknowledge the initiatives in the climate agreement,” Ms Steffensen concluded.
