France’s GTT has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Beijing Enterprises Group for the evaluation of its full containment technology for LNG onshore storage tanks for the expansion of the Tianjin Nangang LNG project in northern China
The MOU signing coincided with French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Beijing to discuss trade with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders concluded trade deals worth a total of US$15Bn during their talks.
GTT said its membrane technology is being evaluated for new storage tanks that would each have a capacity exceeding 220,000 m3 at the Tianjin Nangang LNG project.
Opened last year, Tianjin Nangang LNG import terminal is 98% owned by China’s Sinopec, with a capacity of 3 mta or about 0.43Bn ft3/day (bcft) of regasification capacity. Set for completion in 2021, the expansion could reportedly add an additional five storage tanks, each with a capacity of 220,000 m3.
While Chinese shipyards have built LNG carriers with GTT cargo containment systems, this would be the first use of GTT technology for onshore LNG tanks in the country.
In January, China’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard delivered Pan Africa, the last of a series of four 174,400-m3 capacity built with GTT No96 membrane technology. The three others in the series, Pan Asia, Pan Americas and Pan Europe, were delivered between 2017 and 2018. All four vessels are owned by Teekay LNG Partners and chartered to Shell.
As of the end of September, Pan Africa is one of 26 LNG carriers with GTT membrane cargo tank technology that have been delivered by South Korea, Japanese and Chinese shipyards in 2019.
