Sif Holding is to manufacture 84 monopiles for the 800-MW Vineyard Wind offshore wind project in the US.
Sif’s scope of work under the contract – which marks the company’s breakthrough in the fast-growing US offshore wind sector – will see it manufacture the monopiles at its facilities in Europe and deliver them to the US in 2020-2021. The company said the monopiles would be stored at its MV2 facility in Rotterdam prior to be shipped to the US east coast.
Vineyard Wind is the first commercial-scale offshore wind project in the US. It is being built approximately 23 km south of Martha’s Vineyard. The project is being developed and realised by Vineyard Wind LLC.
The monopiles’ installation will be subject to a schedule that includes seasonal restrictions on pile driving activity to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.
Sif said it will “maintain a very strict manufacturing schedule” for the monopiles to ensure these seasonal restrictions can be met.
Sif chief executive Fred van Beers said, “This is an exciting milestone in our continuous development as monopile manufacturer.
“By being part of the supply chain for the first large-scale offshore windfarm to be built in the US, we have taken an important step towards growth in new markets.”
Vineyard Wind is a partnership between Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
