With more shipowners seeking new ships with performance monitoring and optimisation technology on board, shipbuilders are working with classification societies to have their smart solutions verified
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), working with ABS, has developed class-approved smart shipping technologies.
ABS verified the smart functions of HHI’s integrated smart-ship (ISS) platform and issued the first product design assessment (PDA) for its data infrastructure.
ABS has also issued the first ever new technologies qualification for the operational performance management (OPM) functions. This verifies the route optimisation, performance monitoring and reporting capabilities of HHI’s system.
Vessels using HHI’s system will be provided with the SMART (INF) notation and SMART (OPM) record comment.
As of January 2020, seven ABS-classed ships are being prepared to receive ABS smart notations and descriptions, subject to final surveys. These include three tankers, three very large gas carriers and one floating storage and regasification vessel.
HHI executive vice president and chief technology officer Jae-Eul Kim thinks this development is “paradigm shift” in ship newbuilding and smart operations.
“The smart-ship concept, which makes full use of available data, is rapidly changing the transportation market,” he said. “To address the need, we developed the ISS system as a data analysis platform based on shipbuilding and smart technology and are incorporating it into an increasing number of vessels.”
ABS senior vice president for global engineering and technology Patrick Ryan thinks this technology will help ABS develop condition-based class strategies.
“Smart technology has significant potential to drive asset performance,” he said.
In April 2019, ABS introduced its first notations on smart technology applications and published its Guide for Smart Functions for Marine Vessels and Offshore Units. This established a goal-based framework for smart function implementation with a risk-informed approach and requirements for smart-function assessment.
As a result, smart functions can be verified as following the provisions of both this guide and the ABS Guidance Notes on Qualifying New Technologies.
PDA is an assessment of materials, components, products or systems for a specific use in compliance with ABS rules, guides and recognised standards.
ABS New Technology Qualification services provide guidance on early adoption and efficient implementation of new technologies.
