Moray West, the joint venture owned by EDP Renewables and Engie, has been awarded marine consent for its proposed 800+ MW offshore windfarm in the outer Moray Firth.
Together with planning permissions for the associated onshore electricity transmission infrastructure which were granted earlier this year, the award completes the suite of consents necessary to allow the project to enter the UK Government’s next contract for difference (CfD) auction which will be held this summer. Subject to winning a CfD, Moray West will commence construction in 2022.
Moray West director Dan Finch said, “I would like to thank all of the communities, individuals and organisations who have engaged with us as part of the process, allowing us to secure a consent within a challenging CfD timescale.
“Moray West follows hot on the heels of Moray East, which is currently under construction and will supply power to the grid at less than half the price of offshore windfarms installed to date. We look forward to working with the local economy as we enter the auction which will establish Moray West as the next high-capacity, low-cost, low-carbon generation project in Scotland. The project will also be a major step towards the strengthened target in the revised Scottish Climate Change Bill of net zero carbon emissions by 2045.”
Moray Offshore Windfarm (West) Limited, known as Moray West, is an offshore wind project 22 km from the coast of Scotland. Development of Moray West follows on from the delivery the adjacent Moray East offshore windfarm, which was granted consent in 2014, won a CfD in 2017 with a record breaking low figure of £57.5/MWh, and is currently in the construction phase.
In May 2019 a memorandum of understanding was signed between EDP and Engie to form the 50:50 umbrella joint venture covering all offshore wind projects for the two companies. It is planned that the new JV will be fully operational by the end of 2019.
