Madrid-based ACCIONA has unveiled a research project that aims to validate the feasibility of combining floating wind and solar power to produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale
The company is co-ordinating the OCEANH2 research project, in which it is seeking to design and validate the concept of an offshore facility that generates, stores and distributes green hydrogen.
Other partners in the project, which has received support from Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation through the ‘Science and Innovation Missions programme’ and Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology include Redexis, Ariema, TSI, Wunder Hexicon and BlueNewables, together with 12 Spanish research centres.
The project partners will study different implementation options for power generation systems based on floating wind and solar power, and evaluate a range of alternatives for the production, storage and distribution of green hydrogen.
Following the study, ACCIONA plans to validate the solution identified at laboratory scale and integrate a maintenance and monitoring system for it using internet of things technology.
The next phase of the project will also see the company address challenges thrown up by the potential construction of the green hydrogen hub and optimise the proposed design.
ACCIONA said OCEANH2 “is aligned with Spain’s commitments to the energy transition and sustainable development goals, the decarbonisation of the Spanish economy, and achieving targets for carbon neutrality in 2050 while meeting commitments for gender equality and social inclusion.”
