Oceanco strengthens vessel integration through Alewijnse acquisition
Alewijnse is entering a new phase of development and plans to provide innovative technology to the maritime, towage and offshore industries following its acquisition by an expanding group
Oceanco Group, under new owner Gabe Newell, has acquired system integrator Alewijnse, entering a new phase of providing innovative technology for the maritime, towage and offshore industries.
Alewijnse, with more than 135 years of experience in electrical engineering and automation, will continue to operate as an independent company within the Oceanco Group,
This transaction follows seven years of Alewijnse being a portfolio company of Strong Root Capital.
Oceanco and Alewijnse have worked together on vessel projects since the 1990s providing electrical systems for newbuilds, and this partnership aims to accelerate innovation for sustainable growth.
“With Alewijnse joining Oceanco, we have the opportunity to develop new solutions and innovations that serve several maritime sectors,” said Oceanco chief executive Marcel Onkenhout.
Alewijnse chief executive Gert Bravenboer added, “We are strengthening our market position. Electrical systems integration is at the heart of our maritime industry. Together with Oceanco and Gabe Newell, we can further build, and we see great opportunities to realise our long-term ambitions.”
Alewijnse has become increasingly involved in tug building, autonomous vessel development and delivering hybrid and electric propulsion technologies in the past year.
In April, the electrical system integrator said it had supported Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam to increase its capability to build up to 80 tugs and workboats per year.
Since opening this shipyard in 2014, Damen and Alewijnse have jointly delivered more than 100 vessels, including tugboats, workboats, patrol vessels and crew tenders.
They collaborate to produce electric-propulsion reverse stern drive tugs to Damen’s RSD 2513 E design at the Vietnamese shipyard with electronic system integration and large battery modules that can charge within two hours.
To help Damen increase tug production, Alewijnse has expanded its facilities and switchboard production in southeast Asia.
Also this year, Alewijnse joined Damen in the Fieldlab Autonomous Sailing Technology project which will test autonomous navigation technologies on a patrol boat.
Alewijnse is contributing as an electrical system integrator to a collaboration with Damen Naval, the Province of Zeeland, the Municipality of Vlissingen, the HZ University of Applied Sciences, TU Delft, and other companies in the Netherlands. Together, they will test autonomous sailing and electric propulsion on a Damen Stan Patrol 900 design vessel in the Port of Vlissingen and aim to apply these technologies to larger ships in the future.
The partners are retrofitting a 1990-built, 9-m vessel by replacing two diesel engines with powerful electric motors and equipping it with cameras, sensors, radar, lidar, GPS, and wind and speed measurement instruments, to replace the traditional human helmsman.
