Four offshore construction vessels will be built in China for a Norwegian owner with advanced dynamic positioning, integrated bridge equipment and battery-hybrid DC electrical systems
Sea1 Offshore ordered four 120-m offshore construction vessels (OCVs) from Chinese shipbuilder Cosco Nantong with battery-hybrid propulsion and integrated automation and bridge systems.
Kongsberg Maritime will supply an energy management system, dynamic positioning (DP), battery-hybrid DC power and propulsion and the latest automation and control units for these OCVs and will work with Sea1 Offshore to accurately assess emissions reductions during their operations.
Equipment packages include K-Pos dynamic positioning, integrated control and navigation systems, battery-hybrid DC electrical systems, as well as all main propulsion and thruster units.
Battery-hybrid DC power modules will enable single-engine usage for most propulsion requirements during the vessels’ operational time. This engine will be supported by onboard energy storage units, which could be recharged through a high-capacity shore power connection that could also allow for zero-emissions operation during port stays.
Kongsberg’s energy management system will distribute energy to the 250-tonne hybrid electric crane, gangways and remotely operated vehicles for high energy efficiency. It also captures regenerative power and balances the use of batteries with variable speed engines, whether running on diesel, biodiesel or methanol.
Permanent magnet motors on all azimuth thrusters will improve energy efficiency during K-Pos DP operations.
“Our integrated systems will enhance vessel efficiency and significantly reduce emissions,” said Kongsberg Maritime vice president for offshore sales, Ottar Ristesund. “We are collaborating with Sea1 on an indepth benchmark study to assess the emissions reductions of the many individual measures incorporated into the design and our deliverables,” he said.
“This insight should increase the awareness of the efficiency potential of operations as well as provide insight into future vessel designs.”
The first two vessels are due to be delivered in Q1 2027 to Q2 2027. Two additional vessels are due to be delivered in Q3 2027 and Q4 2027.
