Aker BP deploys world’s first autonomous communications offshore

Tampnet said its North Sea fibre network and wireless infrastructure brings the connectivity needed to unlock an advanced digital ecosystem on offshore platforms in real time. This network supports mission-critical communications and gives faster response times, smarter operations and higher resilience.

A PMEC/5G module provides local autonomy as edge computers process operational data offshore, including real-time sensor data, instead routeing everything to shore.

These units support predictive maintenance and remote access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools and expert systems, digital twins and augmented reality, and support the operation of autonomous drones and robotics.

“Tampnet’s 5G edge infrastructure is more than a connectivity project, it is an enabler for oil and gas companies to scale advanced use cases such as remote operations, AI-based optimisation and dynamic reservoir monitoring,” said Tampnet managing director for North Sea infrastructure Per Atle Sørensen.
