Alfons Håkans has received the second of two ice-breaking tugboats it ordered to modernise its fleet operating in the northern Baltic Sea
Sanmar completed Helios at its Altinova Shipyard in Turkey to Robert Allan’s TundRA 3200 design. It left Turkey at the end of last week on its way to its home port in Finland.
Helios is powered by two Caterpillar 3516C main engines each driving a Kongsberg US 255 CP Z-drive, giving the 31.5m tug a bollard pull of more than 65 tonnes. It has a beam of 12 m and hull depth of 5.6 m.
Helios is capable of performing multiple tasks, including ship escort and assistance, ice-breaking and ice management, open sea towing, fire-fighting, small cargo transfer, salvage and oil spill recovery.
Like sister tug Selene which was delivered to Alfons Håkans earlier this year, Helios was built to Bureau Veritas class as an escort tug with hull strength of ice class 1A, an unmanned engineroom, in-water surveys and Green Passport-EU.
“Helios has a unique balanced design that combines good seakeeping and relatively high free-running speed in open water with substantial escort performance and has an effective ice-breaking capability,” said Sanmar.
“The hull is designed for ice-breaking with strength that is significantly above requirements of the prescribed ice class 1A to ensure safety during ice-breaking operations and eliminate the possibility of structural damage and shell plate deformation,” the tug builder said.
For ship-assistance, Helios is fitted with all necessary equipment and fendering for two directional, bow and astern pushing and pulling.
Helios’ electrical requirements are provided by two Caterpillar C7.1 generator sets each of 118 kW.
