Alpha Bulkers' Capesize leads rescue operation in South China Sea
A bulk carrier owned by Anna Angelicoussis-led Alpha Bulkers was involved in a successful rescue operation in the South China Sea
According to a statement from the Greece-based shipowner, 2016-built Capesize vessel Alpha Optimism spotted a sinking fishing boat with five people on board on 20 September. The incident occurred while the vessel was navigating between mainland Malaysia and Borneo. Upon noticing the distressed boat, Alpha Optimism’s Master immediately activated the general alarm and alerted the company.
“We promptly instructed our Captain, Apostolos Pouladias, to begin the rescue operation and ensure the safety of those on board,” Alpha Bulkers stated. “Our company is deeply committed to such matters. This reflects the philosophy of Greek seafarers.” it added.
The crew of Alpha Optimism successfully rescued all five individuals, bringing them safely aboard the vessel. The rescued individuals were provided with food, clothing and other essential supplies.
It seems the fishing boat had been adrift for several days before being discovered.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Master and crew - all of whom are Indonesian - for their professionalism throughout the operation,” Alpha Bulkers added.
Nikolaos Nikolaou, the operations manager at Alpha Bulkers, has been co-ordinating with Indonesia’s security and rescue agency to ensure the safe disembarkation of the rescued crew.
