Angelicoussis deploys Starlink on 140-ship fleet
A major Greek shipowner is using communications with LEO satellites for high bandwidth and low latency connectivity for real-time data telemetry and high-definition video transfers
Angelicoussis Group has deployed Starlink connectivity across its vessels to double its use of data on a fleet of around 140 ships.
One of the world’s largest privately owned shipping groups adopted SpaceX’s Starlink low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications to enhance crew welfare services and enable advanced operational applications, such as high-definition video transmission.
Angelicoussis selected Starlink for its tankers, gas carriers and dry bulk ships for its high speeds and bandwidth and low latency compared with its legacy connectivity services over geostationary orbiting satellites.
Navarino supported deployment of hardware including flat-panel antennas and below-deck terminals and integrated it with safety and back-up communications services, for periods where Starlink is not available.
High-speed, low-latency broadband is used for video calls and transfers, real-time telemetry, crew internet and access to online applications across the fleet.
“Starlink has transformed connectivity from a constraint into a strategic asset for the Angelicoussis group,” said Angelicoussis fleet ICT manager, Efstratios Arvanitidis.
“Its ‘home-like’ internet at sea has become a clear advantage in attracting and retaining younger seafarers and strengthening our overall crew value proposition.”
For operations and safety, Starlink enables transfer of high-definition video files for insurance claims, incident analysis, and proactive or condition-based maintenance.
Video can be uploaded and downloaded in minimal time, accelerating decision-making and improving collaboration between ship and shore.
Real-time monitoring and telemetry are increasingly used to enhance vessel performance, optimise maintenance, and support higher safety and technical standards across the fleet.
Angelicoussis has flexible, pooled data plans for higher data consumption and business requirements, cybersecurity controls and a simplified connectivity stack.
The Greek shipowner is positioned for the next wave of digitalisation at sea, it said.
Angelicoussis operates a diversified fleet of 160 vessels segments with a combined carrying capacity exceeding 22M dwt and has over 9,700 employees globally.
