Arrendadora expands fleet in Guatemala with newbuild order
An independent Latin American tugboat owner has ordered another azimuth stern drive vessel from a shipbuilder in Vietnam for operations in a port on Guatemala’s Pacific coast
Arrendadora Continental has ordered another newbuild harbour tug from Damen Shipyards to support ships calling into a major port on Guatemala’s Pacific coast.
Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam is building this azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug ready for its arrival in Guatemala in September 2026, when it will begin working in Puerto Quetzal.
Arrendadora Continental ordered the new 23-m tugboat after securing an extension contract from the port authority of Puerto Quetzal to operate an additional tug, making a total of six tugs operating in the harbour.
San Jose is being built to Damen’s ASD tug 2312 design with a beam of 12 m and a bollard pull of up to 70 tonnes.
Its construction follows the delivery of a similar ASD 2312 tug, named Iztapa, to Arrendadora Continental in 2025.
“We have been very happy with the performance of Iztapa and are highly motivated to expand our operation with a further vessel,” said an unnamed Arrendadora Continental operations manager.
ASD 2312 tugs have a twin fin skeg on the hull, twin high-speed diesel engines, two azimuth thrusters on their stern and a covered winch for operations both fore and aft.
This winch is located below the wheelhouse, shielded from the elements, and contributes to creating an obstacle-free and safe working deck, said Damen.
The Dutch group had previously delivered a Stan 2207 design tug to Arrendadora Continental, Hercules, in 2000, and it was still in operation with the company in 2025. After Iztapa’s arrival, Damen Trading helped Arrendadora Continental find a new owner for the 22-m vessel in Colombia.
Damen said San Jose will be completed in the Song Cam shipyard in July this year before being sailed on its own keel to Guatemala for its September arrival.
