Australian ports group's sustainability efforts recognised
An Australian port authority has gained recognition from two sustainability encouragement schemes for its plans to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) has strengthened its sustainability by investing to reduce emissions and waste across six harbours in Australia.
For these endeavours, it has become the first Australian port authority to be certified by Green Marine for its maritime environmental programme and has achieved silver-partner status in the NSW government’s sustainability-advantage scheme.
Green Marine benchmarked Port Authority of NSW against performance metrics including air emissions, water quality, community relations, noise and waste management, while the NSW government assessed its sustainability and operations including defining, measuring and disclosing Scope 3 emissions and progress towards net-zero targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Port Authority of NSW carried out a climate change risk assessment and created an adaptation plan. It continuously collects data and monitors operations to find ways for improvement and has started initiatives aimed at improving resource efficiency.
“As stewards of the marine environment in each of NSW’s six commercial ports, it is encouraging to see our sustainability efforts recognised by both Green Marine and the NSW government,” said Port Authority of NSW group executive covering people and the environment, Amy Beaumont.
"These achievements reflect the progress we have made in embedding sustainable practices across our operations, as we work towards net zero by 2040.”
It has optimised fuel consumption on vessels operated by, or for, the port authority such as pilot transfer vessels, workboats and tugboats.
In January 2024, it reached the milestone of reducing Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions to zero by purchasing renewable energy under a power-purchase agreement.
The port authority is investing in its White Bay Cruise Terminal to offer shore power to cruise ships at berth from renewable energy sources which it claims would be the first project of its kind in the southern hemisphere when it is completed in 2026.
