Energy storage systems will have lower upfront investment, smaller footprints and shorter installation times
Newly introduced onboard energy storage systems (ESSs) for inland and coastal vessels and workboats offer lower capital expenditure and faster installation times, according to their developer.
Wattlab has developed WEstack as a standardised battery system for inland vessels and workboats, which it claims can be installed on board in a day.
The Rotterdam-headquartered company said it should help remove barriers to decarbonisation, such as: the high cost and long installation times associated with marine battery systems.
WEstack is fully assembled and tested in Wattlab’s workshop, ready for delivery and installation on vessels. Wattlab claimed the system reduces installation times, while cutting run times and raising the efficiency of diesel generators.
“Generators on vessels operate most of the time at only 10-15% of their capacity, which is extremely inefficient,” said Wattlab chief executive, Bo Salet.
“At low loads, a generator consumes relatively large amounts of fuel. By adding a battery pack, the generator can charge the battery at its optimal operating point, after which the battery supplies power to the vessel,” he said.
According to Wattlab, WEstack is designed to reduce generator running hours by 80% to 90%, cutting fuel consumption and emissions, lowering maintenance costs, and reducing dependence on shore power where available.
WEstack is available in four standard capacities: 100, 200, 300, and 400 kWh and can be installed on the aft deck of a vessel, either during its commissioning or in retrofit projects.
“More and more ports want to reduce emissions and noise pollution,” said Mr Salet. “With a battery system, vessels can operate silently and emission-free for much longer periods without relying on shore power.”
Elsewhere, Echandia has unveiled Echandia Core, a new modular ESS built on lithium titanium oxide (LTO) chemistry for fully electric and hybrid vessel applications.
The Swedish manufacturer said Echandia Core provides safety and predictable performance, with a lower upfront investment and a small installation footprint.
It added that LTO technology is highly competitive over the full lifecycle of a vessel, due to its long service life, minimal degradation and high operational reliability.
Compared with Echandia’s previous ESS offerings, it delivers 30% lower upfront cost and a 30% smaller footprint, the company said.
“LTO has always made a very strong case when you look at total cost of ownership,” said Echandia chief executive, Magnus Eriksson.
“Its long lifetime, fast charge and discharge capability, and low degradation are what many marine operators need,” he said.
Echandia Core can be used for full electric propulsion or hybrid applications, including spinning reserve, peak shaving, back-up power and load levelling. It complements Echandia’s existing products, Echandia Ultra and Echandia Robust.
It supports system configurations of up to 1,500 V of direct current with a current rating per string of 500 A, energy per 63-kg module of 5,216 Whr and operational temperature between zero and 55˚C. Its lifetime supports 65,000 cycles and 3C charge and discharge rates.
Meanwhile, Corvus Energy has signed a strategic co-operation agreement with BYD Energy Storage to co-develop a new generation of marine ESS based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. BYD will manufacture battery cells and Corvus said it will provide its experience in marine system integration to develop a low-cost, safe and reliable ESS optimised for maritime environments.
EST-Floattech has received DNV type approval for its Octopus LFP battery system, developed for electric and hybrid vessels including ferries, inland vessels and workboats that charge overnight and operate emissions-free during the day.
Nereida Energy has raised NKr32M (US$3.3M) from Norwegian investors, including Grieg, Eviny, Nysnø and Nye Aasen through a private placement of shares to develop a range of ESSs for service vessels, workboats, tugs, aquaculture boats and ferries. These will include battery modules that can be installed at different heights in a battery room, control system and software.
