Autonomous vessel technology was advanced in the UK after an artificial intelligence-driven system to be used on naval vessels was tested
Atlas Elektronik has tested its artificial intelligence (AI)-driven autonomous navigation system ARCIMS on a simulation platform before its deployment on unmanned vessels.
Testing ensures its compliance with IMO’s International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Colregs) and raises trust in AI-drive navigational decisions.
Atlas Elektronik UK used BMT’s SEAS testbed to test this navigation technology and algorithms to check their ability to operate safely and effectively in complex and dynamic maritime environments.
ARCIMS was tested in detailed synthetic maritime environments, replicating complex operational scenarios under controlled, repeatable conditions. This supports the system’s readiness for certification and deployment, while advancing the safe integration of autonomous systems in real-world maritime operations.
“Our partnership with Atlas Elektronik in the UK underscores the importance of simulation-based assurance in developing safe, reliable autonomous systems,” said BMT campaign lead for maritime autonomous systems, Will Alexander.
“Building trust in AI decision-making is equally vital. Trustworthy AI must be embedded into the foundation of autonomous systems.”
BMT’s SEAS testbed was “ensuring systems are not only compliant, but also capable of making informed, crewlike decisions in dynamic maritime environments,” said Mr Alexander.
ARCIMS is being installed and used by the UK Royal Navy’s first mine countermeasures unmanned surface vessel (USV), RNMB Hydra. SEAS tested ARCIMS in a wide array of high-pressure scenarios designed to stress-test its algorithms and reveal actionable insights for refinement.
BMT provides technical input into the UK’s Defence Maritime Regulator guidelines and tools to the UK Naval Authority Technical Group, while providing information to the Maritime Autonomous Systems Regulatory Working Group.
Also in the UK, autonomous navigation developer Robosys Automation moved into new headquarters in Southampton at the start of April to support the company’s global expansion. The new base has workshops and administration offices to accommodate Robosys’ growing team, which consists of software developers, technologists, vessel integrators and administration staff.
