Long range (LoRa) wireless radio frequency and wide-area network (WAN) technologies are being used to monitor cold-chain cargo in real time on the new Daily Canarias line
Boluda selected Witrac to deliver these technologies to monitor containers on ships transporting refrigerated goods from Cadiz, Spain to islands ports of Las Palmas and Tenerife. Witrac is developing solutions with real-time location and telemetry capabilities and has integrated US-headquartered Semtech Corp’s LoRa technology with its own WANs.
It has integrated the LoRaWAN protocol and LoRa 2.4 GHz frequency radiocommunications into its global track and trace platform to provide customers with control and traceability of assets in the supply chain.
Boluda introduced the Spain-Canary Islands container trade in December 2020, which will operate with six vessels, transporting perishable products and other goods in containers to the islands through its distribution channels. Boluda said the route “represents a milestone in links between the Iberian Peninsula and the archipelago”.
It complements its current services from the primary mainland ports and international connections with West Africa, north Europe and the Mediterranean.
Witrac’s technologies enable uninterrupted and continued tracking and monitoring of containers and goods using internet of things (IoT) controllers in reefer containers to automatically keep food and medicines within a pre-determined temperature range during voyages and transportation.
Witrac chief executive Javier Ferrer said using Semtech’s LoRa devices supports its mission “to re-evolve and digitalise Industry 4.0 through visibility, traceability, control, and efficiency”.
“Our customers and their stakeholders have the ability to guarantee delivery times and maintain appropriate temperature conditions of fresh food transport inside refrigeration units throughout the entire cold chain by leveraging the long range, low power capabilities of LoRaWAN networks and the global reach of LoRa 2.4 GHz,” said Mr Ferrer.
