It has been a hectic start to 2019 for tug and ferry construction at the Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard with multiple vessels launched and one delivered.
The Chinese shipbuilder has launched three tugboats and started constructing its next tug project. It has also launched one ferry and delivered another to domestic operators.
On 23 January, Jiangsu Zhenjiang launched azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug Xin Beibuwangang 15. This tug was built for Beibu Gulf Port Co’s BeiHai Port branch and will have a total power output of 2,942 kW.
This followed launches of two other ASD tugboats on 8 January. These tugs are built for Tianjin Port Tug & Barge Co and will each have total power of 2,354 kW. All three ASD tugs were lifted from dry construction facilities in the shipyard on to quaysides and will be outfitted before being delivered to their owners.
Outside of tugboat construction, Jiangsu Zhenjiang launched a passenger and vehicle ferry on 25 January. This will be named Kogang-9 and will be built for Taizhou Kogang Ferry Co.
The shipbuilder’s first delivery of 2019 was ASD circle passenger and vehicle ferry Jiangsu Ludu 3016. This 89.5-m vessel was built for Zhenyang Automobile ferry management and will operate in Jiangsu province. It has a total width of 15.7 m, hull depth of 3.5 m and four lanes on the main deck for vehicles. It has a speed of 18.5 km/hr and maximum load of around 700 tonnes.
Also in January, Jiangsu Zhenjiang was outfitting the first dual-fuel ASD tugboat, which will be operated in Ningbo Zhoushan Port later this year. This is based on a Robert Allan design RAstar 3800-DF. This 38-m tug will have a pair of Niigata 8L28AHX dual-fuel engines powering two Rolls-Royce US 255 controllable pitch Z-drives, a bollard pull of around 80 tonnes and LNG storage capacity of 55 m3.
This month, Jiangsu Zhenjiang delivered 48,500-dwt heavy lift general cargo carrier Top Elegance. This is the fourth sea camel-type cargo ship the shipyard has built.
Jiangsu Zhenjiang also had a busy Q4 2018 in terms of tug and ferry construction.
