Capt Rajalingam Subramaniam takes home this year’s Tanker Shipping & Trade Industry Leader Award
This year’s Tanker Shipping & Trade Industry Leader Award will go to an industry pioneer, who leads from the front, is happy to take the initiative on transformative change, and gets things done.
AET’s president and chief executive officer Capt Rajalingam Subramaniam, or Capt Raja as he is known throughout the industry, began his career as a cadet at MISC’s training academy, ALAM, and progressed through the ranks to Master Mariner. He then served as a fleet superintendent and operations manager, before heading up shipmanagement in AET and latterly MISC. He has also worked for MISC’s ultimate owner, Petronas, Malaysia’s national oil company.
As head of the shipmanagement division of MISC he led the team that transformed MISC into a global leader in energy transportation.
Capt Rajalingam says he learned a lot about leadership from his late father, an armed forces warrant officer: “A very big part of me emulates my late father, and I wish he was still around. The man that I am today is all due to his strict upbringing.” This may also explain why Capt Rajalingam still serves in the Royal Malaysian Navy. In November 2009 he was appointed Honorary Commander in recognition of his role as Patron of MISC’s Naval Reservist. Other leadership positions include a four-year stint as a vice chairman of Intertanko, and more recently as the first chairman of Intertanko’s Gas Tankers Committee.
Business, operational and technical issues impacting the crude, product and chemical tanker trades will be discussed in London at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference, Awards & Exhibition, 20-21 November 2018.
