Carnival Corp brand Princess Cruises has become the first ship operator to secure early access to a new constellation of satellites for gigabyte connectivity for passengers and crew
O3b mPower will augment the Princess MedallionClass experience to enable passengers to use onboard wifi for internet access, social media, online gaming, media streaming and other online applications.
O3b mPower will provide gigabytes of bandwidth to cruise ships over spot beams of Ka-band when they are launched into medium Earth orbit (MEO) during 2021-22.
This constellation will ensure Princess MedallionClass ships are not constrained by traditional bandwidth capacity as SES will keep bandwidth ahead of demand with multi-gigabyte capabilities where and when it is required.
SES has also become a partner in Carnival’s Global Experience and Innovation unit, which is responsible for design, creation and delivery of connected guest experience innovations, technical platform development, intelligence and hybrid cloud and edge computing enablement.
Princess Cruises’ MedallionClass experience uses the Ocean Guest Experience Platform and Carnival’s OceanMedallion to enhance guest-crew interactions, passenger connectivity and deliver personalised services.
OceanMedallion is worn by guests to enable keyless cabin entry, online payment, turn-by-turn shipboard wayfinding, shipmate locator and personalised itineraries. It speeds up embarkation and facilitates on-demand services, such as ordering food, drinks and merchandise.
Princess MedallionClass will be fully active on 11 ships by the end of 2020 with a new ship activated every 60 days.
It is currently available on six Princess Cruises ships – Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Ruby Princess, and Sky Princess. In March 2020, Grand Princess will be added, followed by Enchanted Princess in June, Emerald Princess in August, Coral Princess in October and Island Princess in December 2020.
Guests on these ships will be able to stream original content via Carnival’s OceanView, use Ocean SportsBook for betting, play massive multi-player video games, stream video from favoured streaming services and check home security cameras.
In addition, the Princess MedallionClass ships will have the Ocean guest experience cloud-connected platform for seamless land/sea digital experience, including OceanView TV for viewing on mobile devices.
