Clasen Rickmers-led ASSC breaks into dry bulk with Handysize purchase

ASSC managing partner Clasen Rickmers announced via social media that the company has purchased its first bulk carrier, 2016-built, 39,500-dwt Spirit of Tokyo. “This modern Handysize represents a strategic step into the dry bulk segment and underscores our commitment to diversifying and strengthening our fleet portfolio,” Mr Rickmers said.

Although the vessel’s identity was not officially disclosed, Spirit of Tokyo’s specifications match those of NY Trader III, which reportedly changed hands last June for around US$17M.

According to its website, ASSC currently manages a fleet of 10 vessels, including container ships, commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs), platform supply vessels, and now a bulk carrier.

Background and investments

ASSC was established in 2015 as a family owned spin-off of Bertram R C Rickmers’ shipping interests, continuing a legacy of more than 183 years in the industry. In the aftermath of a severe financial crisis, Rickmers Holding AG and its affiliates underwent restructuring in 2017.

ASSC re-emerged in 2019, placing orders for feeder container vessels in China. More recently, it has broadened its activities in offshore wind. Clasen Rickmers is a partner in Windward Offshore, a joint venture developing four CSOVs at Vard. The consortium includes Semiramis Paliou-led Diana Shipping, one of Greece’s leading dry bulk owners.

At the time, Mr Rickmers noted the Rickmers family had once again decided to actively support the energy transition and position itself as a first mover, ensuring sufficient vessel capacity from 2025 onwards, when windfarm projects currently in planning and permitting are expected to be installed and commissioned.
