Class gives green light to new HHI-EMD ammonia dual-fuel four-stroke engine

A new high-pressure, four-stroke ammonia dual-fuel engine from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Engine & Machinery (HHI-EMD) has secured approval from seven major class societies, clearing the way for its use in ships.

Approval for the HiMSEN ammonia dual-fuel H32CDF-LA engine was obtained from Korean Register, ABS, DNV, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, Lloyd’s Register and RINA during testing at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine Technology Centre from 29 September to 2 October.

HHI-EMD said this new HiMSEN engine is based on the technology of its first high-pressure direct-injection ammonia engine, completed in 2024, using the platform of the H32C diesel engine. While its H22CDF-LA ammonia engine can support outputs up to 2.2 MW, HHI-EMD said this more powerful model extends that capability up to 5.4 MW, allowing for a broader range of ship applications.

The engine builder claimed it has been able to achieve excellent engine efficiency and emissions performance by developing the core technology for high-pressure direct injection combustion, and in the process has filed for domestic and international patents for its electronic fuel boosting device, electro-Hydraulic Boosting Unit (e-HBU). Additionally, it applied previous proven safety design concepts used in its dual-fuel engines that combust a wide range of fuels, including ammonia, to secure safety validation from classification societies.

With this classification approval, HHI-EMD has expanded its line-up of ammonia dual-fuel engines.
