Classification society ClassNK has introduced a programme for certifying innovative technology in maritime to accelerate smart shipping adoption
It has launched Innovation Endorsement as part of the ClassNK Digital Grand Design 2030 programme, which aims to diversify certification services and scope.
ClassNK’s Innovation Endorsement certification service focuses on digital technology verification in ships, products and service providers. It was developed to support improvements in maritime safety, sustainability and information sharing through innovative digital technologies.
According to ClassNK general manager of the Digital Transformation Center and corporate officer Toshiro Arima this endorsement programme was required due to the lack of evaluation standards.
“Up until now, we have carried out certifications in accordance with the mandatory requirements of international conventions and of our rules,” he explained.
“On the other hand, it is likely that a clear evaluation standard has yet to be established for innovative technologies, which can occasionally hinder their diffusion.”
Innovation Endorsement will provide certification services regardless of existing standards. It will be “based on the policies of speed-focus and establishing evaluation criteria in co-operation with front runners,” said Mr Arima.
“In co-operation with technical front-runners, we will continue establishing appropriate evaluation criteria and providing prompt certification services,” he said.
Innovation endorsement certification will be carried out and classified under three key areas.
Ships: A new class notation Digital Smart Ship will be established and will be given to vessels applying digital technologies including monitoring and autonomous navigation.
Products/solutions: Includes innovative products or solutions that are expected to be widely used in the future such as those involving condition-based monitoring, fuel efficiency improvement, data quality assurance and electronic logbooks.
Providers: Certification of development methods for creating innovative technologies by companies and of the companies themselves.
These endorsements come on top of ClassNK’s work on developing cyber security. Earlier in July, ClassNK released the second edition of its Guidelines for Designing Cyber Security Onboard Ships, targeting newbuildings and shipyards.
These guidelines are based on the ClassNK Cyber Security Approach, which outlines the classification society’s basic approach to ensuring onboard cyber security for ships.
ClassNK will discuss cyber security challenges and solutions during Riviera’s Maritime Cyber Security Webinar Week, starting 4 August 2020, use this link for more details and to register
