Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will host a summit meeting on offshore wind in the North Sea on 18 May 2022
The North Sea Summit will include the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz; Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte; and Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo.
The event will take place in Esbjerg and will focus on the central role offshore wind will play in phasing out fossil fuels in the EU and how the North Sea can become a ‘green powerhouse’ for Europe.
At the summit, heads of state and the Commission President will adopt a common vision for deploying offshore wind and related infrastructure in the North Sea.
The EU’s energy commissioner and ministers for climate and energy from the respective member states will meet in Esbjerg on the same day with the aim of strengthening regional co-operation.
Prime Minister Frederiksen said, “Europe must be independent of Russian gas as soon as possible. Denmark will lead the way for the North Sea to become a green powerplant for the whole of Europe. That is why we have taken the initiative for the summit, and I welcome the support from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the European Commission.
“I look forward to demonstrating the green energy potential of the North Sea and discussing how we increase the level of ambition and accelerate the development of offshore wind and related infrastructure in the North Sea.”
The Offshore Wind Journal Conference will be held 14 June 2022. Details and tickets can be found here
