A Swiss tech start up is spinning off a new firm that aims to take advantage of a ’circular economy’ for scrubber technology and introduce mobile carbon capture technology
Daphne Technology has launched a new spin off, Daphne Solutions, that will focus on specific sulphur removal and carbon management technologies.
The Swiss maritime technology start-up, originally a spin-off from Lausanne’s Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 2017, is sponsored by Saudi Aramco and has received private venture capital as well as funding from Trafigura, Shell and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 R&D program.
The parent company previously launched an exhaust gas ’purification system’ which converts a hydrogen sulphide (H2S) waste stream, through emissions processing, into ammonium sulphate fertiliser. In 2024, Daphne Technology launched PureMetrics, which measures and reports in real-time the tonnes of GHG emissions released into the environment from vessels with the system on board, to facilitate compliance with EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) and IMO Data Collection System (IMO DCS) regulations.
The first installation will be trialled this year on an LNG carrier chartered by Trafigura and managed by Latsco LNG with the aim of measuring GHG emissions and methane slip.
Daphne Solutions, Daphne’s new spin off company, will take over key projects from Daphne Technology, such as SulPure, allowing it to streamline work and focus solely on providing waste-to-value technology for its industrial clients.
Founder and CEO Mario Michan said “The new entity will focus on delivering circular economy solutions that help industries convert emissions into valuable resources while minimising their environmental impact.”
In addition to sulphur removal, Daphne Solutions says it will also introduce mobile carbon capture technology into the market to help industries manage emissions at the source. These portable systems will be designed to be scaled to meet facility needs.
