Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in China has delivered the last of six chemical carriers in Odfjell’s latest fleet renewal programme
Odfjell’s ground-breaking newbuild series comprises four 49,000-dwt vessels with 33 stainless steel tanks – currently the world’s largest chemical tankers – and two 38,000-dwt vessels with 40 tanks.
Bow Orion is one of the four 49,000-dwt stainless steel chemical carriers and was the subject of a detailed ship description in Tanker Shipping & Trade.
Odfjell Tankers chief operating officer Harald Fotland said “The delivery of Bow Excellence marks the completion of our building programme at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard. This has been an exciting journey with excellent support from all parties involved.
“As a consequence, we now operate six of the world’s most sophisticated chemical tankers: environmentally friendly and well suited for our customers’ present and future requirements. The first vessel, Bow Orion, won the ‘Tanker Ship of the Year’ award in 2019 and its performance over the last year has confirmed it was well deserved.”
Bow Excellence flies the Norwegian flag, and enters round-the-world trade. As with the other newbuilds, it is manned with Odfjell seafarers, operated inhouse by Odfjell Ship Management and commercially managed by Odfjell Tankers.
Bow Excellence is a double-hull IMO II tanker for chemicals and oil products with 40 stainless steel cargo tanks, an ECO-design hull with large propeller and derated main engine. Service speed at design draft is 14 knots, with main engine consumption at design draft about 18.6 tonnes/24 hr of HFO. Length overall is 182.88 m, length between perpendiculars 179.43 m, breadth 32.20 m and deadweight 38,235 dwt.
Energy-saving features include a large fixed propeller and asymmetric rudder with rudder bulb, main engine with long stroke and low SFOC, separate FW cooling system for scavenging cooler, LED type lighting including floodlights and navigation lights. Its engineroom fans are frequency-controlled including pressure, temperature and main engine fuel index and the boilers have frequency-controlled fans.
The air-conditioning system is of water chiller type with heat recovery wheel and frequency-controlled supply/exhaust fans, the main seawater cooling pumps have frequency control and LT cooling pumps have a dedicated harbour cooling pump.
