Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) has entered into a framework co-operation letter of intent (LOI) with China’s leading ship design house, Shanghai Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI)
The LOI covers co-operation in joint ship design projects for vessels ranging from passenger cruise ships to modern ‘green’ river ferries.
This joint collaboration will boost ship design capabilities in China in an effort to attract shipowners looking to build or refit their vessel in the country. SDARI is a design arm of China Shipbuilding Corporation Group (CSSC), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders.
“This co-operation represents an important milestone for a long and successful relationship between CSSC group, SDARI and TDoS,” said TDoS (Asia) general manager Peter SS Tan. “And it provides a reliable support for TDoS’ growth strategy in the Chinese market. Our combined competencies and design capabilities will enable us to provide shipowners a ‘one-stop-shop’ experience,” he added.
SDARI chief engineer Wang Gangyi said SDARI and TDoS would co-operate in the interior design, marketing of cruise ships, high-end ropax vessels and sightseeing ships, “so as to promote the win-win development of both sides.”
TDoS group chief executive Stefan R Nilsson added SDARI was in “a strong position to be a leading Chinese passenger ship design house. With TDoS’ design portfolio experience, we chose the best to co-operate with in an exploding market. We see this joint co-operation as a means to move designs to a higher level in China. And that would give the Chinese cruise manufacturing an added-edge and assurance to shipowners as well.”
