Classification society DNV GL and Singapore-based digitalisation specialist Alpha Ori Technologies have signed an MoU agreeing to work together to further maritime industry digitalisation
The companies said they will share data and create frameworks and standards to enhance existing and to build new products and services.
The MoU is based around installing Alpha Ori’s SmartShip system, trialling the use of digital technologies to further simplify the relationship between the ship operator and class.
The partners said they will cover many of emerging areas for maritime digitalisation, including remote monitoring and operations, the digital supply chain and predictive maintenance systems. More owners are now opting for monitoring systems and advanced analytics to help companies optimise their energy and fuel consumption.
SmartShip is a digital shipping solution for data collection, monitoring and operational advice. It collates data from disparate onboard systems and displays this for crew and managers to enable them to make better decisions. The platform received ClassNK approval in 2019.
DNV GL said the MoU identified three potential areas for exploration: data exchange for digital class services, possibilities for continuous assurance and remote operations and monitoring.
Alpha Ori co-chief executive Captain Rajesh Unni said “By deploying Alpha Ori’s SmartShip application on a vessel, surveyors can access real-time data”.
“The resulting advantage is that one can remotely access the health of a vessel and verify whether a ship is compliant with IMO 2020 and other regulatory requirements. This digital approach is reliable, efficient, and can improve savings,” he said.
DNV GL regional manager for southeast Asia, Pacific & India, Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria said “By working together with leading technology solution providers, alongside owners and operators we can unlock broader maritime digitalisation and build on the value these new technologies generate.”
DNV GL also signed a MoU with Wärtsilä in February to accelerate digitalisation.
